Daoping Mine (Tangping Mine), Gongcheng Co., Guilin Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China

Although metallic Lead is not all that visually charming, a number of its derivative minerals can be and some are spectacularly so. Pyromorphite: Lead chloro-phosphate can range in color from none to the striking green hue displayed by this specimen from China. It is composed of a myriad of hexagonal prisms; some of them hollow, profusely coating a matrix of the same massive Pyromorphite. The longest of the crystals appear to be on the order of .44 inch (1.0 cm) in length, and there are many of that size. Since this colorful mineral was first found at Daoping, it has achieved the same stratospheric levels of collector interest and value as specimens from the few other localities of comparable quality and aesthetics. There are a few broken crystals but they are very difficult to pick out on cursory examination. The condition is otherwise excellent and approaching pristine. There are brown traces of the host "gossan" now gone. Recently Chinese collectors are acquiring an ever-increasing amount of any specimens that have come from Chinese Mines. This is likely to continue and impact the availability of superb specimens like this one.
    Overall measurements: 6 x 4.5 x 2 inches (15.2 x 11.4 x 5.1 cm).

Provenance: Minerals America [Hoppel # D2161]
