Mina Ampliación a Victoria, Navajún, La Rioja, Spain

Home to the best Pyrite cubes in the world is a pit about 2½ miles outside of the town of Navajún, where Pedro Ansorena Garret has been digging these stark geometric wonders since 1970, when he was granted the mining concession. This is a fine example of the type, showing an simple cubic Pyrite crystal embedded in a marl matrix ( a mixture of clay and lime) of Cretaceous age. The brassy faces of the crystal are regular and sharp enough to appear to have been "machined." At 2.81 inches (7.1 cm) on edge, it is in the upper size range for examples from Navajún. In excellent condition. [Note to all owners of Navajún Pyrites: Please - Do not wash these! The clays in the marl matrix will fall apart and you will have a loose crystal with no matrix.]
    Overall measurements: 7 x 8 x 3 inches (17.8 x 20.3 x 7.6 cm).

Provenance: Global Treasures [Hoppel # D1191B]
