Description

    Pyrite
Ampliación a Victoria Mine, Navajún, La Rioja, Spain

If minerals could aspire to "brand" status like Kleenex or Scotch Tape, certainly the cubic Pyrite from "Navajun" would be in the front of the pack. There isn't a mineral collector on the planet that can't recognize these brassy wonders instantly. Pedro Ansorena Garret, the man who mines these geometric wonders, has a veritable "gold mine" on his hands. The mine only produces Pyrite, in a size range from a couple of millimeters to monsters like this one, measuring 2.12 inches (5.4 cm) on edge. As is normal for Navajun Pyrites, there is great metallic luster, with interesting striations and growth figures, and, in this case, a couple of twinned crystals just barely emerging from two of the faces on the big cube. The Pyrite is embedded in the natural matrix. The new owner is cautioned not to immerse the specimen in water, since the marl matrix will absorb it, and start to disintegrate; there are no problems at all, if it is kept dry. Condition is pristine for this very distinctive mineral and it has a custom base.
    Overall Measurements: 6.0 x 5.0 x 4.7 inches (15.2 x 12.7 x 12.0 cm)

Provenance: Ex. J. Mark Fisher Collection

    Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
