Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mts, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania

Only within the last few years have the artisanal miners of Merelani become aware that there are other things worth saving than just Tanzanite. It turns out that along with Graphite crystals and Diopside, the miners had been throwing away the brilliantly reflective Pyrite crystals that occur in the same deposit. Most of these shining geometric forms are more or less equant in their shape and look like brass baseballs with highly reflective, flat surfaces. This isn't always the case as this unusually proportioned metallic sculpture shows. Any attempt to link the overall shape of this weird object is doomed to fail. It sits on a broad area of fractured and regrown Pyrite that tapers in width and thickness as one moves away from the base. Along the way, one side of the sculptural object shows an abrupt shift in angle, from tapering in, then back to almost vertical, before arriving at the termination. All surfaces of the "Tower" are incredibly flat, smooth and mirror bright. There are signs of Graphite crystal inclusions, now vanished, that have been partially obscured with new Pyritic overgrowth along with the usual conchoidal nicking and fracturing that virtually all Merelani Pyrites seem to show up with. Based on other Pyrites that we have seen from Merelani we would have to say that condition ranges from fine to excellent and the exotic form puts the piece in a class by itself. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.
