Pyrite after Pyrrhotite with Sphalerite and GalenaTrepča Complex, Mitrovica, Mitrovica District, Kosovo
16 x 16 x 5 cm (6.30 x 6.30 x 1.97 in)
For anyone familiar with Kennedy's collection, it is quite easy to see he had a fascination for Sulphide minerals, putting special focus on those that possessed some uncommon attribute. This piece was purchased from Ross Lillie in February 2014 and features sharp hexagonal crystals of what were once Pyrrhotite that have been fully pseudomorphed by brassy yellow crystals of Pyrite; these pseudomorphs stand out marvelously against a slough of splendidly-formed, flashy, black Sphalerite and minor associations of Galena. The most substantial of these pseudomorphs is presented at the top of the specimen, reaching 6.2 centimeters across. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.
From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.
