Canaveilles, Pyrénées-Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

This specimen represents a bit of a conundrum: on one hand, it very definitely is from the find made at Canaveiiles about 15 years ago. On the other hand, Posnjakite has not been reported from that locality. So; the more likely situation is that it is a Calcite altered by Copper bearing mine water, which has resulted in the deposition of two Copper minerals; one of which could be Posnjakite. We mention two because there are two Copper minerals of very different hue on the piece. Langite was mentioned on the label accompanying it, but it will take sophisticated analytical equipment to tell just which Copper minerals they are with any degree of certainty. Irrespective of composition, the Copper infused Calcite cluster is worthy of attention on aesthetic merits alone. The matte pyramidal forms rendered in two tones of blue and green coupled with the dusting of colorless, hair-like needles of Selenite are reason enough to covet the cluster. There were never many examples from this one find and further production is not at all likely. In excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 6 x 6 x 3.5 inches (15.2 x 15.2 x 8.9 cm).

Provenance: North Star Minerals [Hoppel # D2251]

    Estimate: $4,400 - $5,000.
