Description
Polished Turquoise Free-Form"Blue Diamond Mine," outside of Austin
Lander County
Nevada, USA
This elongated, tabular, Turquoise free-form hails from the illustrious Blue Diamond Mine in Nevada. The locality is famous for producing some of the hardest and most striking Turquoise, which hints at the name of the mine. Discovered in the 1930s, the mine is categorized as a "hat mine" due to the small but high-quality deposits that could be covered by a hat. The mine reached peak production in the 1960s and 1970s, with activity tapering off during the 1980s. Recently, limited mining has resumed under the new owner. The striking Turquoise is coveted for its distinct tabular flat shapes and smoky black matrix, forming a distinct interlaced pattern. The contrast between the mottled matrix and the rich Turquoise is prized, and this material is exceptionally rare. This plate-like example boasts a rich blue or 'Tropical Turquoise' hue and has been stabilized, a common practice for the variety. The nearly 8-inch ( 20 cm) specimen, which weighs 655 grams, is a rare find for the type and comes with a custom wooden base for ease of installation. The historic specimen is scarce and beautiful; these examples are not often seen on the market, especially in this size.
Turquoise Measurements: 7.87 x 3.33 x 1.13 inches (20.00 x 8.45 x 2.88 cm), weighs 655.2 grams
