Pink Smithsonite
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Smithsonite is normally colorless, however when there are elements other than Zinc floating around in the Zinc-rich fluids, that are trying to crystallize, some of them may be incorporated into the Smithsonite crystal structure. Copper, Manganese, and Cobalt are a few of the elements that produce colorful tints in normally colorless material. Here, it is likely that the pink coloration is due to Manganese being included into the growing Smithsonite crystals. Close inspection of the gray and black areas of the specimen show that it was formed when loosely packed fragments of broken ore partially filled a fissure. These fragments were cemented together by the pink crust of Smithsonite crystals that are so prominent on the piece. Some breakage was occasioned by the efforts to remove the specimen from the confines of its fissure; otherwise it is in excellent condition.
