Liscombe Deposit, Wilberforce, Monmouth Township, Haliburton Co., Ontario, Canada

Ask any 100 mineral collectors what is their top 100 of desirable specimens and it is almost certain that Phlogopite will not appear on anyone's list. Part of the reason for that is simply that there aren't very many good Phlogopite specimens (or localities, for that matter). All of which makes this black beauty, a pretty rare item. Atypical for Phlogopite, it is composed of massive blocky crystals up to 2.88 inches across. The faces are lustrous and thin sections show a deep brown color. There are a number of cleavages as one would expect from any Mica specimen, but surprisingly most of the blocky crystals are intact. You won't be seeing a lot of these: there aren't that many Phlogopite specimens of this caliber - anywhere.
    Overall measurements: 6.5 x 5.88 x 3.88 inches (16.5 x 15.0 x 9.9 cm). Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Tyson's Minerals [Hoppel Catalog # D1841]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
