Bombay Quarry, Mumbai District (Bombay District), Maharashtra, India

The "Pet Rock" craze has, thankfully, been over for a decade or two now, but one of the burning questions that still bedevils mineralogical sociologists today is: Why no one of that period thought to use Okenite as THE top choice for this dubious honor and economic opportunity? One would think that the greater world would have recognized the superior "pettability" of Okenite. Okenites are furry, fuzzy and somewhat forgiving when subjected to the tender mercies of countless tykes and their unwashed fingers, glazed with the results of their last two (or possibly three) meals. The three attention loving Okenites are joined in this composition by four larger, spherical Gyrolite crystal groups of bone-white color and one hundred or so, much smaller spheres of the same mineral. The largest of the Okenites on this plate measures around 1.25 inches (3 cm) across while the Gyrolites are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Numerous, sharp Calcite crystals with dark brown cores complete the tableau by serving as convenient perches for some of the smaller Gyrolites. Overall condition of this aesthetic plate is pristine, and it has a custom acrylic base.
    Overall Measurements: 8.5 x 7.0 x 2.75 inches (21.59 x 17.78 x 6.99 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel #D0304]

    Estimate: $2,500 - $3,000.
