American Tunnel, Gladstone, Eureka Dist., San Juan Co., Colorado, USA

This is a nice piece of ore from one of the legendary Gold mines of Colorado: the American Tunnel, part of the Sunnyside Mine group. The mine first opened in the 1880's and operated off and on up until recently. Over $150,000,000 in various metals came from this group of workings. The mine has the dubious distinction of having drilled and blasted upward into the mud in the bottom of Lake Emma. Fortunately, when the mud plug let go, it was on a Sunday and all the miners were somewhere else. The lake drained down through the workings and blasted out of the American Tunnel: spewing ore cars, mine timbers, and muddy water, like a fire hose. Locals wondered why the Animas River was rising on a day with no clouds. When some of them drove up the canyon to the mine - they found it still in the process of draining the lake. When it was over, the Animas River was well supplied with Gold - washed down and out of the mine. One look at this specimen and you can see where some of that Gold came from: there is visible Gold along with brassy Chalcopyrite in the dark matrix. Anytime that you can see Gold in a specimen it is rich, high-grade ore. There are a number of patches of visible Gold on this specimen.
