Native Gold on Quartz
    Presumed to be California

There are complex, reticulated micro-Gold crystals covering the exposed areas of this Native Gold specimen, adding another layer of complexity and depth. The Gold crystallization is a combination of "leaf" and "dendritic" forms, erupting from the Quartz matrix. The milky white Quartz is unusual as it actually displays a few euhedral crystal faces in one area - something very uncommon with matrix Gold specimens. On one side there are a number of small crystals of a black mineral, possibly Galena, that intermingle with the Gold in a few places. When this specimen was first transported from the European collection, where it had resided for generations, it was encased in a significantly larger amount of Quartz: it had never been cleaned; and the majority of the Gold was still trapped in the host rock. But because the unusual Galena crystals were perched on the Gold, extensive photographs were taken before the specimen was "cleaned." These photographs will be used to help track down the originating locality from existing records. Hopefully the Galena will offer enough of a clue to match it to other recorded specimens, as it is extremely unusual to have this association. The only other specimen that we know of is Lot 73215, which came from the same collection: they obviously were discovered at the same time. They migrated from the Gold fields of California to Europe, where virtually no one knew of their existence, until now. Now that the specimen's full glory and beauty has been exposed for the world to see; it causes one to speculate: what else came out of that mine? There is a custom base to hold the specimen upright.
