Native Gold on Quartz with "Slickensides" - 6.92 OZT
    Presumed to be California

The striations on one corner of this leafy, crystalline mass of Native Gold is clear evidence of what happened to it after formation. The striated area at one end of the specimen is a sign of a fault "smearing" part of the Gold against an adjacent rock surface as they moved past each other; geologists call these movement indicators: "slickensides" - a bit of evidence that reveals part of the history of the specimen. In general finding slickensides are unusual, but in particular, it is extremely unusual to find a Native Gold slickensides. The surrounding "rock" is the translucent, white variety of Quartz that often accompanies Native Gold and there are euhedral Quartz crystals at one end of the larger Quartz mass; this is an uncommon feature. Speckling the Gold is a dark, crystalline mineral that is intergrown with it: possibly Galena. This Galena is a clue as to where this specimen originated but it is extremely unusual to have Galena as an associated mineral with Gold. Extensive photographs were taken before this specimen was cleaned in order to document this apparent mineral anomaly. Literature research is currently being conducted in order to determine if the mine identity can be gleaned because of this association. This extremely well crystalized Gold specimen had been in the collection of a European family for at least 100 years, and probably more, according to family lore. Another specimen, Lot 73216 clearly came out of the same mine because it also had the Galena crystals. Evidently both specimens made their way to Europe and sat in this collection for many, many, ... many years. It has been fitted with a custom base and is in excellent to pristine condition.
