Description

NATIVE GOLD
Olinghouse District, Washoe Co., Nevada, USA

Some Gold localities produce specimens sufficiently 'different' to be identifiable on sight. Olinghouse Gold specimens have a distinctive microcrystalline texture while still showing mirror-bright reflectivity. Combined with the gray Andesite matrix, the total picture is pretty definitive. As Olinghouse Golds go, this is quite a bit larger and richer in Gold than normal. One major vein, and a much smaller minor one, snake through the Andesite. Originally much of the vein was co-habited by Calcite intermingling with the Gold. Dissolution removed most of the Calcite, leaving the shining Gold. The slightly pale yellow coloration of the Gold shows that there is a certain percentage of Silver alloyed with it. The Gold veins appear to be between .75 inch (1.9 cm) and .88 inch (2.25 cm) in thickness at it's widest.
Overall measurements: 6.5 x 4.5 inches (16.5 x 11.4 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Global Treasures [Hoppel Catalog # D2066]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
