Description
Native CopperKeweenaw Peninsula
Michigan, USA
A lattice of elongate Copper crystals provides the theme for the abstract sculpture seen here. Sharply defined groups of crystals, some up to 4 inches long, with a wonderful chocolate-brown patina, crisscross open areas allowing inspection, both into and through the specimen. Were this specimen made of plastic, the sheer beauty of form that it possesses would still qualify it as a superb sculpture. As a product of Nature's foundry, it is stunning in its appeal. According to anecdotal records, the specimen (bearing accession # B-50153) was formerly in the Wayne State University Collection. Given the fine patina, an educated guess would date this specimen to at least the early 1900s, if not earlier - it is a shame that the fog of time has obscured the origins of this wonderful Native Copper "sculpture."
Measurements: 8.0 x 4.0 x 1.0 inches (20.3 x 10.2 x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel Catalog #D0039]
