Native Copper
    Keweenaw Peninsula
    Michigan, USA

This massive crystallized Copper specimen hails from the renowned "Copper Country" of Michigan where Copper has been mined dating back thousands of years. The area is well-known for producing pure Copper specimens (Native Copper) as opposed to Copper oxides. This elongated example appears to be a somewhat historical piece, most likely having been mined in the late 1800s when commercial mining was significant in the region. This large example of inter-grown Copper crystals exhibits a three-dimensional latticework displaying hundreds of shiny faces often with sharp points. A rather notable feature of this specimen is the chocolately-brown patina, which is a desirable characteristic of Native Copper and the result of exposure to oxygen. There are also several patches of green "alteration" as well as other white and clear crystals within the Copper crystals. The rustic, collectible piece is extremely long, measuring an impressive 24 inches (61 cm) from end to end. This exceptional example of "classic" crystallized Michigan Copper is as decorative as it is collectible. The piece is in excellent condition but could likely benefit from some additional cleaning by a knowledgeable expert before it goes on display.
    Overall Measurements: 24.02 x 8.66 x 3.54 inches (61.00 x 22.00 x 9.00 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]

    Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.

While I regret my inability to personally view the work, you provided an excellent substitute for my not being able to do so, and I look forward to future Heritage auctions.
