Native Copper with Cuprite
Campbell Shaft, Bisbee, Warren District, Mule Mts, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

In spite of the obvious fact that Copper mines exist to mine ... Copper, there are some situations where you can have too much of a good thing. This happens when someone dumps an ore car full of "high-grade" Copper into a crusher, not noticing that one of the chunks in the pile, is solid metallic Native Copper, which crushes about as well as a fifty pound wad of chewing gum. Mining companies have learned to pick masses, like this one, out of the "ore stream" - before they have to take apart the crusher, in order to pry loose the Copper, that is mashed into the works. This one shows signs of having been in the ore stream, before being spotted, and removed. It is a solid mass of Native Copper weighing around thirty pounds. It is partially mantled with Malachite and, on one end, dark, dark-red: massive Cuprite. The surfaces of this monster "nugget" show a number of "dings" and bruises because the whole process of blasting, loading into the ore chute, dumping into the ore car, etc., etc. took its toll. But since Copper is so malleable, all of that did surprisingly little damage to the piece. Other than the aforementioned "dings," this massive piece is in fine to excellent condition.
