Escondido Pegmatite, Conselheiro Pena, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Now you see it, now you don't. That ought to be the theme of this mineral curiosity. It is pretty clear from the shape of the cavity that one or two Spodumene crystals used to occupy the space at the center of the piece, now occupied by air. It is also clear that radical changes in conditions resulted in beautiful, hexagonal tablets of Muscovite mica being deposited as a crust on the Spodumene and the Spodumene being dissolved. Muscovite deposition continued for a short time afterbecuase there is also Muscovite deposition on the inner surfaces of the hollow "cast." The unusual mode of formation should not be taken as the only notable aspect of the specimen. Considered simply as a Muscovite crystal group, it is outstanding. Single blades of Muscovite over 2 inches (5.3 cm) across sprout from thickets of smaller, similar ones encrusting the piece. Nestled among the silvery, yellow-green blades are a number of colorless, euhedral Quartz crystals of various sizes. The interior of the cast also sports occasional blades of Albite feldspar. Condition is excellent.
    Overall measurements: 10 x 5 x 5.5 inches (25.4 x 12.7 x 14 cm).

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel # D1914]
