Description

    Mimetite var. Campylite
    Blea Gill, Caldbeck Fells
    North and Western Region (Cumberland)
    Cumbria, England
    United Kingdom
    4.02 x 2.99 x 1.50 inches (10.20 x 7.60 x 3.80 cm)

Campylite is a variety of the mineral Mimetite distinguished by its curved faces. These "barrel-shaped" Mimetites are known from less than ten localities worldwide. As with this specimen, the curved nature of the crystals results in a spherical shape. The color shifts from red to yellow to ultimately green, and a mix of those colors extends from the core outward. Based on the associated labels, this is a rather "old" specimen. The piece does exhibit some bruising. This type is a prized specimen due to its size and origin. An old collection label and newer University of Chicago label join the piece labeled "2222" and "2194."

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. University of Chicago Department of Geological Sciences [Hoppel #D1159]
