Blea Gill, Caldbeck Fells, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, United Kingdom

Mimetite is a not uncommon Lead Arsenate mineral known from many mining districts worldwide. Campylite is a variety of Mimetite that is distinguished by the curved faces of the Mimetite. The name is an allusion to the Greek word "kampylos" - meaning "bent" - a reference to the bent or curved sides of a barrel. These curved or barrel shaped Mimetites are known from ten or less localities around the globe. In some cases the curved nature of the crystals results in groups taking on a spherical shape as is seen in this specimen. Color varies with changes in accessory Chlorine and Phosphorous content, shifting from red to yellow and finally to green. Here we have a mix of those colors and in some cases the shift in coloration extends from the core of the crystals outward. This specimen is quite old judging from one of the two labels accompanying it. There are a several bruised spots on the specimen - a not uncommon problem with old specimens when less care was taken in collecting. Nevertheless, specimens of this size and origin are still highly valued. It is accompanied by one old collection label, and one in a more recent style from the University of Chicago. The backside of the specimen has two collection numbers affixed: "2222" and "2194".
    Overall measurements: 4 x 3 x 1.5 inches (10.2 x 7.6 x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. University of Chicago Department of Geological Sciences [Hoppel # D1159]

    Estimate: $3,500 - $4,500.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
