Description

    MICA
Sapo Mine, Ferruginha, Conselheiro Pena, Doce Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Three-dimensional Mica crystals are actually quite rare, particularly as large matrix specimens. Over 5.5 inches (14.4 cm) across and 1.63 inches (4.2 cm) in thickness, this huge, silvery hexagon is nestled into a matrix of white Cleavelandite blades. It has an additional feature that ups the interest value - an Aquamarine crystal, but not a normal one. This Aquamarine is hidden inside the matrix, where corrosive fluids have almost succeeded in dissolving it away. At the bottom of the two hexagonal cavities, showing on opposite sides of the matrix, there is the remainder of a gemmy Aquamarine that shows highly etched surfaces. The cavity originally housed a euhedral Aquamarine that must have been over 5.5 inches (14 cm) in length, because the cavity is that long. Light shined down one cavity end goes right through the remaining Aqua and out the other side. As a lagniappe, there is a second mica crystal, of the same sharp form as the big one, off to one side of the matrix. The condition of this most unusual piece is excellent.
    Overall Measurements: 7.0 x 6.0 x 6.0 inches (17.8 x 15.2 x 15.2 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel #D1996]
