Gibraltar Mine, Naica, Mun. de Saucillo, Chihuahua, Mexico

Anyone who has paid attention to National Geographic Magazine, or recent science programs on television, cannot escape notice regarding the unbelievable "Cave of the Crystals" located deep in the workings of the Naica Mine. Operating since 1794, this lead/zinc/silver mine has produced a veritable flood of fine mineral specimens over the years. Even though the giant Selenite crystals overshadow these other specimens, some of them are notable in their own right. Such a specimen is this one composed of two euhedral rhombs of pink Manganocalcite up to 1.75 inches across, perched on black crystals of Sphalerite and sprouting a robust crop of water-clear Quartz prisms from various surfaces. Numerous tiny Manganocalicites are sprinkled in among the Quartz prisms. Originally in the Bentz Collection, it subsequently became part of the J. L. Smith Collection. There is an accession number "896" but there is no corresponding label.
    Overall measurements: 4 x 3 x 2 inches (10.2 x 7.6 x 5.1 cm).

Provenance: The Rocksmiths, ex. J.L. Smith Collection, ex. Bentz Collection [Hoppel # D0823]
