MANGANOCALCITE WITH PYRITE
Chengzhou Area, Hunan Province, People's Republic of China
At first glance this specimen looks to be some miners attempt to 'dress up' a specimen and defraud the naïve. On closer observation, it becomes apparent that the Pyrite 'outlining' isn't on the edges of the Calcite, it's in the Calcite. How this came about is a problem yet to be solved. However it came about, it has taken a good Manganocalcite and made it into a great one. The tabular bladed crystals are sharp, lustrous and remarkably free from damage. Like most light pink Manganocalcites it fluoresces pink under U.V. light. The fact that there is no mine name accompanying it indicates that the miners are probably hoping to keep the locality a secret. An intriguing specimen in excellent condition. 4 ¾ w x 3 h x 2 ¾ inched deep.
