Penokee Group, Ironwood, Gogebic Iron Range, Gogebic Co., Michigan, USA

Very, very rarely something aesthetic manages to appear from the inky depths of a Manganese mine. Besides everything in the place being black, it is almost invariably without crystal form. Black + Amorphous = DNC (Do Not Collect). Since part of that rule does not apply to this scintillating bit of Manganese Oxide, it is clear that it was not only worthy of collection, its merits were such that it ended up in the Texas Tech University collection where its identity undoubtedly baffled undergraduate students for many years. Manganite specimens with decent crystals are quite rare and desirable and this glittering example easily fulfills that criterion. Here the upper portion of this sizable piece sprouts a veritable forest of shining, stout needles up to 5 or 6 millimeters in length. The Manganite forms numerous hillocks rising one to two inches above the massive material and all surfaces of the hillocks and the crevices between them are covered with the brilliantly reflective needles of Manganite. There is no matrix other than the massive Manganite that the crystals emerge from. Among the crystals is an off-white patch or two of an unidentifiable mineral and a small rust brown area on the back, that can just be an iron stain or some Hematite that co-deposited with the Manganite. Condition is fine to excellent with a few areas where contact has occurred, they are pretty much lost among the forest of needles. On the bottom side is an accession number "310" which we assume was applied by Texas Tech.
    Overall measurements: 7 x 6 x 4 inches (17.8 x 15.2 x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: The Rocksmiths, ex. Texas Tech University [Hoppel # D1225]
