Mindigi Mine, Swambo, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo

It is very hard to comprehend that an object, with this much luscious color and an equivalent amount of otherworldly luster, just happened to form all by itself, with no help from humans, but it did. The only interaction supplied by humans was in getting it out of the mine without screwing it up. Fortunately, they did, and the proof is the pristine condition of this wildly chatoyant, three-dimensional group of Malachite "fans" from the Mindigi Mine. The accompanying Silverado Minerals label alleges that the source is the Star of Congo Mine, but the characteristics of the specimen are most similar to the ones from Mindigi. Congolese localities are often guessed at by "brokers" who get the specimens from local runners, whose due diligence may be lacking. Whichever the mine, the specimen is the best we've ever seen of its type. It is truly worthy of display and veneration in any museum, art gallery, or connoisseur's collection.
