Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga, DR Congo

High on everyone's list of places to avoid is the deceptively named "Democratic Republic of the Congo:" a place of adolescent road bandits with AK-47s, Anopheles mosquitoes with lethal stowaways, unmapped forests, feticheurs, "bush meat" of unspecified origin, etc. It is also a region with untold riches in: Uranium, Cobalt, Tantalum, Gold, Diamonds, Copper, etc. The lure of the latter has drawn adventurers since word of these rumored treasures first escaped the "Heart of Darkness." For mineral collectors the place is kind of a dark Avalon: a place of fables, and, almost mythological reports of exotic minerals with incredibly large forms and perfection. The bubbly green confection offered here is a case in point. It features numerous botryoidal growths of a bright green hue, with subtle luster that is between matte and druzy. The botryoids range in size from pinheads to ones that are 1.5 inches (4 cm) across, and, they are draped all over a fragmented gossan matrix. There are a couple of very small "scuffs," otherwise condition is excellent, and approaching pristine. This exceptional specimen comes with a custom acrylic base.
    Overall Measurements: 10.0 x 5.8 x 3.8 inches (25.4 x 14.6 x 9.5 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel #D0335]

    Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
