Malachite on Native Copper: Malachite "Mushroom"
26K Stope, 1400 Level, Cole Mine, Bisbee, Warren District, Mule Mts, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

Whether you call it a "mushroom," or a "palm tree," or heaven forbid: a matrix Native Copper with a Malachite encrustation, the fact is that this is a very unusual Bisbee specimen. Specimens, similar in appearance, came from the 26K stope on the 1400-foot level of the Cole Shaft. Like this one, the 26K specimens combined Native Copper with Cuprite on the classic orange red matrix. Overcoating the free-standing Native Copper "wire," are tufts and radiating growths of fibrous, chatoyant Malachite. The black granular growths on the upper surface appear to be Psilomelane or Hetaerolite; both are black, Manganese-based oxide minerals. The condition of this exotic specimen is excellent with some minor "bald" patches where the Malachite has worn off. Additionally, there has been professional reinforcement of the "stem" to insure its stability. There has been some conjecture that this exotic specimen dates to the turn of the last century (1800s to early 1900s), when there was a major discovery of these "mushrooms." This is such an uncommon, and notable, specimen habit, that this is a strong possibility.
