Description

MAGNESITE
Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Brazil

As prevalent as Magnesium Carbonate is in the rocks of the world, the number of places that can claim to furnish respectable (large, transparent and of good form) examples can be counted on one hand. Pre-eminent among those five or less localities is the deposit at Brumado, Brazil, where well-formed and transparent crystals are encountered on an irregular basis. Most are considerably smaller than this monster specimen, bearing a huge rhomb of Magnesite some 4.13 inches (10.48 cm) across. There are several subsidiary rhombs clustered around the base, but the big one is the main story of the piece. It is quite transparent with glassy luster and great striations on the major faces of the 'monster.' Condition is excellent with the only problems being confined to dings to inconsequential areas. N.B. If this were a Calcite specimen, it would be considered to be significant; as a Magnesite it is world-class.
Overall Measurements: 5.23 x 3.34 x 3.55 inches (13.3 x 8.5 x 9.04 cm)
Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Williams Minerals [Hoppel #D0799]
