Description

Löllingite on Magnetite
Huanggang Fe-Sn Deposit, Hexigten Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China
16 x 12 x 12 cm (6.30 x 4.72 x 4.72 in)

It's easy to understand why the Löllingite specimens from the Huanggang Fe-Sn Deposit are regarded among the world's finest for the species, and this dramatic piece exemplifies that reputation. Rising prominently from a dark, contrasting Magnetite matrix is a bold, sculptural cluster of thick, polycrystalline Löllingite aggregates arranged in a striking, multi-directional rosette formation. The metallic silver-grey luster of the Löllingite catches light across countless reflective faces, producing a brilliant, glittering surface texture that enhances its dimensionality. Between the Magnetite base and the Löllingite cluster lies a thin, transitional layer of pale, finely crystalline material-likely a composite of Calcite, Dolomite, and Quartz-which adds both mineralogical complexity and a subtle tonal gradient. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.

From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.
