Cut 20, North Zone, Twin Creeks Mine, Humboldt County, Nevada
Orpiment: A corruption of 'Auripigmentum', Latin for "Golden Pigment", has obviously been around long enough to have acquired a Latin name. The bright yellow color of the powdered mineral might have something to do with it. In spite of its long historical association with Man, there still aren't all that many good specimens of this mineral around. As a result, when Newmont Mines ran into some during Gold mining operations, collectors wasted no time in finagling some. Of the specimens that were saved, the Orpiment crystal groups on a dark, contrasting matrix attracted the most attention. This roughly globular cluster, 1 ΒΌ inches across, is an exquisite example of the higher-end specimens recovered. The deep orange color and adamantine luster intrigue the eye and invite closer scrutiny, while a second smaller group off to one side provides aesthetic balance. There is a minor amount of damage to edges; not an uncommon situation with this material. Further production of this material has ceased and it is highly unlikely that there will be any more from this locality. This fine miniature is well on its way to becoming a classic. Excellent condition overall. 2 h x 1 7/8 x 1 3/8 inches.
