Ampatsikahitra Pegmatites, Sahatany Valley, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar

Here is yet another tongue twister of a lesson in Malagasy locality nomenclature. This time revolving around several Tourmaline prisms of intense coloration, that have been partially swallowed by hefty, and occasionally euhedral Quartz crystals. The longest Tourmaline measures 2.44 x 0.47 inches (6.2 x 1.2 cm), and it has fought its way out from the side of a double-terminated Smoky Quartz. The Tourmaline shows green basal core zoning surrounded by a smoky pink exterior that ultimately grades into colorless and then intense magenta at the termination. The remains of several other Tourmalines, fractured during growth and now gone, are visible. There is a blocky Albite intergrown with the Smoky Quartz on the rear of the specimen and a cavity hidden inside the Smoky Quartz that contains what's left of the previous Tourmaline occupant. Luster of the Tourmaline is brilliant, while the Quartz shows a satin to waxy luster. Condition is excellent since there is no post-depositional damage. This is an old historic specimen found in 1953 accompanied a custom labeled base.
    Overall measurements: 4.9 x 3.7 x 2.6 inches (12.5 x 9.5 x 6.5 cm)
