Description

    LAZURITE
Ladjuar Medam, Sar-e-Sang, Kokscha Valley, Badakhshan, Afghanistan

Just about everybody wearing a piece of Lapis Lazuli jewelry has a 'piece of the rock' from a place almost as remote as the Antarctic. The Sar-e-Sang deposits can only be reached following a 40 km horse or donkey trail from the nearest bad road. The workings extend vertically from 2700 meters to 3400 meters ASL, in steeply mountainous terrain liberally supplied with six and seven thousand meter peaks. Which is why the working season lasts five months at best. For many years, the only products seen by the outside world were chunks of rough material suitable as raw material for carvings and jewelry. As is typical in artisanal mining operations, some of the locals finally wondered if the occasional crystal of Lazurite that appeared in their production might be worth something more than just "ore" value. As it turns out, they were right. Sharp and large crystals in matrix, such as this piece, are worth considerably more as specimens than 'rough'. Here we have a coarsely crystalline white marble with three stout crystals up to 4.4 cm across studding an exposed surface. The Lazurite displays the even Indigo blue color of the best Lapis and the "greasy" luster normally exhibited by these crystals. There are other, partial crystals on the edges but they are irrelevant to its display qualities or value. In excellent condition.
    Overall measurements: 4.25 x 2.25 x 3.5 inches (10.8 x 5.7 x 8.9 cm).

Provenance: Mountain Minerals [Hoppel # D0244]
