Capillitas Mine, Andangal√° Department, Catamarca, Argentina

The banded Rhodochrosite from The Capillitas Mine cannot be mistaken for Rhodochrosite from anywhere else on the planet. Called "Inca Rose," the unique patterning of Inca Rose is a result of Rhodochrosite being deposited as both stalactites and stalagmites in the open spaces of an ore body which was mined by various groups, including the Jesuits, over a production span of over 300 years. Besides the Inca Rose, the deposit is home to over 100 other minerals, three of which were first noted from Capillitas ore. The slab featured here is a fascinating mix of a few of the metallic sulfides that have been a large part of the ore and the banded red-pink - Inca Rose, which was deposited in multiple layers over those glittering sulfides. The patterns exhibited are a mixture of, breccia coatings on sulfide ore fragments, and overgrowth on stalactites of those same sulfide minerals; chiefly Galena. The color varies from brown and tan to a deep "bubble-gum" pink with scattered gray metallic areas. This piece is in pristine condition and is mounted on a custom acrylic stand.
