DescriptionKOLWEZITE on MALACHITE on COBALTOAN CALCITE
Mashamba West Mine, Kolwezi District, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)
In the Carbonate family of minerals, there are versions (Calcite) that crop up almost everywhere. At the other end of the spectrum there is Kolwezite: a Copper and Cobalt Carbonate, that currently has all of four places where it can be found on Earth. Kolwezite was the last mineral to form on the surface of this, rather large chunk of Mashamba West real estate. It forms crusts of radiating micro-crystals of café au lait color, preferentially draped over Malachite crystals of indeterminate form, in turn scattered randomly over pink crystals of the Cobaltoan Calcite that this part of the Congo is noted for. Scattered 'dings' to the Kolwezite expose the underlying Malachite. This may be the largest exposure of this mineral outside of the remaining ore in the mine.
Overall measurements: 17 x 9 x 4 inches (43.2 x 22.9 x 10.2 cm).
Provenance: Luis Leite [Hoppel # D1184]
