Kamgal, Darya Pech, Nuristan, Afghanistan
The high mountain reaches of Afghanistan protect more than just snow leopards and Mujahideen. These remote mountain ranges are the source for many spectacular gem specimens. That they are highly valued is proven by the fact that they manage to reach the 'outside' world at all: very little is traded by the tribal people unless it has a high intrinsic value.
This specimen is probably an extreme example of the premise. Normally, a specimen of its type (flat on matrix) would be crudely hammered from its host matrix in order to reduce its bulk/weight and expedite its transport.
This large: 7+ inches high by 7 inches wide by 2 ½ inches thick feldspar matrix was extracted and transported whole to preserve its esthetic original form. The clean, sharp multiply terminated tourmaline group is a luscious deep rosy-pink hue with fine luster. It is approximately 4 inches in height and is attached on the back side to a very large cream-colored feldspar crystal with white blades of clevelandite scattered over its surface. The tourmaline group is in excellent condition. All in all, this is a truly exotic specimen from a truly exotic location. From a private collection.

    Estimate: $75,000 - $85,000.
