Description

    ILVAITE
1st Sovetskii Mine, Dal'negorsk, Tetjuche, Kavalerovo Mining District, Primorskiy Kray, Far-Eastern Region, Russia

First noted and described from the island of Elba in 1811, for which it was named. The best Ilvaites combine deep black color with luster that is brilliantly reflective. Here we have a matrix group that is composed of Ilvaites inter-grown with stout Quartz crystals with the form of hexagonal dipyramids - somewhat unusual for Quartz. The largest Ilvaite measures over 2 inches (5.4 cm) in length and it is partially surrounded by smaller ones of similar form. A number of the Quartz crystals exhibit inclusions of Ilvaite within, indicating that at least part of their growth history overlapped. All of the Ilvaites show brilliant luster and although there are a few broken crystals, they are not all that obvious.
    Overall measurements: 5 x 4.5 x 2.5 inches (12.7 x 11.4 x 6.4 cm).

    Provenance: David P. Wilber [Hoppel # D1625]

    Estimate: $4,500 - $5,000.
