Rex Mine, Gold Hill District, Boulder County, Colorado, USA

As Silver ores go, Hessite, a Silver Telluride, is one of the more uncommon ones, because Tellurium is not exactly all over the place, nor is Silver for that matter. This old-time piece, from Prof. C. D. Woodhouse's Collection at U.C. Santa Barbara, is a piece of a natural fissure from one of the mines in the Gold Hill District of Boulder County, Colorado. The fissure contains a sprinkling of brassy little Pyrite crystals, matte-gray Coloradoite crusts and several crude crystals with a matte black surface luster. These black crystals, up to 9 mm across, turn out to be the Hessite. On the bottom is a paste-on price sticker of $15.00 that looks to be from Ward's or one of the other natural science providers. This is an exceptionally rich example of this uncommon Silver mineral, as well as the Über-rare Coloradoite, and it is in pristine condition.
    Overall Measurements: 4.5 x 2.0 x 1.75 inches (11.43 x 5.08 x 4.45 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. David New Collection, ex. UC Santa Barbara Collection, ex. C.D. Woodhouse Collection [Hoppel #D1723]
