Description

    HEMIMORPHITE
Potosí Mine (El Potosí Mine), Francisco Portillo, West Camp, Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico

While not the largest Hemimorphite on record, the 1.75 inch (4.3 cm) spray and its sisters are nothing to laugh at. Like a number of fine "Hemi's", this jackstraw group hails from the fabled Potosi Mine, where a good portion of the crystalline Hemimorphite of the world was found. This fine example is notable for the role that iron minerals played in giving it a lovely golden color and a slightly iridescent luster. Multiple narrow sprays are scattered at random over the deep reddish-brown "limonite gossan" matrix. In addition to the "limonite" there are numerous tiny black spheres of some unidentified mineral, presumably an iron or manganese oxide. The usual fracturing around the edges of the specimen but damage to the display area is minimal. Overall composition is strikingly aesthetic and the complementary colors just add to that effect.
    Overall measurements: 4.5 x 2.5 x 1.75 inches (11.4 x 6.4 x 4.4 cm).

Provenance: Roberts Minerals [Hoppel # D1884]

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
