West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region, (Cumberland), Cumbria, England

Familiarity with the ingredients for steak & kidney pie are very likely to blame for the common term for this type of Hematite: Kidney Ore. During the period when Iron mining was going full blast in the district, there were many examples of this dense iron ore with the intriguing rounded forms that were saved by miners from the furnaces of the day. This one would have been mined in the late 1800's when dozens of "pits" were helping to maintain the technical might of the British Empire. It shows multiple shining, mammillary surfaces varying in color from black in a couple of places to dark chocolate brown over most of the piece to a rust-red on the broken edges of the side and back. Note on back of the Witters label is the notation "Al Buranic": a reference to Utah Geol. Survey member and mineral collector - Al Buranek. This specimen is in excellent condition on all display surfaces.
    Overall measurements: 7.5 x 6 x 3.25 inches (19.1 x 15.2 x 8.3 cm).

Provenance: George Witters Minerals [Hoppel # D0227]
