Jackson Mine, Negaunee, Marquette Iron Range, Marquette Co., Michigan, USA

Hematite is one of the main ores of Iron mined for the steel industry and has been associated with human culture since prehistoric times: e.g. red cave paintings from Altamira, Spain, etc. "Needle" Hematite is one of the more unusual forms of Hematite with only a few localities known worldwide. It bears this odd title because of a tendency of massive material to fracture along roughly parallel lines producing thin, pointed fragments of needle-like form. Sometimes they are straight and many are slightly curved. The sinuous form seen in this example is most like the Turkish version of a sword or saber called a yataghan. It is very large for such specimens, most of which are 8 inches (20 cm) in length or under. Dr. Carl Francis, retired curator of minerals at Harvard, stated that these were the longest fibers of this mineral that he had ever seen. (P.C. Carl Francis - 06/20/2013). The surface appearance is a mix of satin black with tinges of deep chocolate red/brown. The specimen is in excellent condition with no observable damage and comes with provenance labels.
    Overall Measurements: 14.5 x 1.25 x 1.25 x inches (36.8 x 3.2 x 3.2 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Ex. William Severance Collection # 97.58, ex. Tom Bee/Topaz Mineral Exploration Collection.
