Description

    HEMATITE after MAGNETITE
Payún Volcano, Altiplano de Payún Matru, Malargüe Department, Mendoza, Argentina

Under certain conditions the superheated gasses emanating from volcanic fissures carry elements that form crystals in these fissures as the gasses cool. Minerals normally found in ore deposits sometimes make an appearance in these fissures. Here we have a beautiful example of Iron Oxide as Magnetite being directly deposited from the gaseous state. This process is often mimicked in the semi-conductor industry by what is termed Vapor Phase Deposition. In this case, conditions were ideal for the formation of large and quite perfect octahedral crystals of Magnetite, showing "hopper" type of growth features. This typically occurs when the edges of the crystal grow faster than the rest of the crystal. Magnetite is the high-temperature version of Iron Oxide. As the temperature drops, the crystals alter on the molecular level to the low-temperature version: Hematite, while retaining the outward appearance of the original Magnetite. In pristine condition, with only one point of attachment in evidence, this exceedingly sculptural specimen stands upright in its custom acrylic base.
