Description

    GYPSUM
Red River Floodway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

In the course of providing adequate relief from periodic disasters, the Canadian Government constructed a massive flood control system involving a 29 mile (47 km) long channel bypassing the city of Winnipeg, between 1962 and 1968. This project called "Duff's Ditch", by waggish opponents of Manitoba Premier: Duff Roblin, turned out to have an unexpected benefit - parts of it contained outcrops of selenite-rich seams that furnished this "starburst" group of pale yellow, water-clear Selenite crystals. As a Selenite group, it is somewhat atypical in that all of the component crystals are much stouter than usual and there is no "ball" of sediment loaded Selenite that they emerge from. Instead, the stubby prisms seem to radiate from a common origin with no visible matrix. Other than a few included areas, the stellate aggregate shows great luster and transparency, and overall condition is pristine. This example came from the collection of one of three field collectors who made the find in 1993.
    Overall Measurements: 5.3 x 4.1 x 4.3 inches (13.5 x 10.5 x 11 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
