Description

    GYPSUM var. SELENITE
Roata Mine, Cavnic (Kapnic; Kapnik), Maramures Co., Romania

One of the best reasons for an accessions catalog is demonstrated in this specimen. Although it is a fine example of a matrix Selenite, there was a little problem in that it didn't match up in appearance with any of the usual Selenite localities seen in collections. There was no identified locality in any of the records. There is a stout, water clear single crystal of Selenite boasting double terminations 4.88 inches (12.5 cm) across and it is on a matrix that was a real puzzler. The matrix combines: Pyrite, Chalcopyrite and Sphalerite crystals, indicating that is from a base metal mine being operated for, at least Zinc and Copper. On top of that is a forest of euhedral and colorless Quartz crystals decorated with small, tan rhombs of a iron carbonate: Siderite or Ankerite are good possibilities. Last, there are a number of colorless Calcite crystals with a peculiar "spiny" surface texture. Evaluating the matrix, and scouring hundreds of Selenite photographs, allowed us to make a pretty good conclusive guess that it is from the Roata Mine of Romania - mystery solved. All of the crystals are in excellent condition and this is a particularly striking and aesthetic specimen.
    Overall measurements: 9 x 4 x 5 inches (22.9 x 10.2 x 12.7 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Victor Yount [Hoppel Catalog # D1665]
