Sierra de Cruces, Mun. de Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, Mexico
Sometimes called "Raspberry Garnets", sometimes just "Pink Grossular", these highly distinctive members of the Garnet family come from an out of the way place in Coahuila, Mexico. It is there, on a rancho, that some open pit workings become the infrequent scene of crude digging operations that sometimes yield matrix groups like this one. While most of the "raspberries" are typically half an inch or smaller, occasionally, ones the size of the largest displayed here appear - .88 inch (2.2 cm) in diameter. Virtually all have dark cores that are visible on broken crystal surfaces - of which there is one on the display side of the piece. The matrix is a non-descript mix of skarn-type minerals usually found in just this type of contact metamorphic deposit.
Overall measurements: 6 x 3.95 x 3.95 inches (15.2 x 10 x 10 cm).
Provenance: Luis Leite [Hoppel # D1609]
