Sherwood Mine, Mineral Hills, Menominee Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, USA

The rounded and metallic forms exhibited by this Goethite specimen suggest a very diverse collection of objects of similar form: a fragment from a broken Botero sculpture, some of Darth Vader's formal wear, etc., etc. The basic point being that it doesn't look like a "ROCK", even though it is. This fine example of Goethite has come from Michigan's iron mining district. Attempts to research it more fully result in less data than already provided by the label, from which we know the name of the mine and that it was mined between the 1940's and the 1950's, when this district was flourishing. The smooth and rounded forms are echoed on a much smaller scale by minute round 'bumps' liberally scattered all over the black exterior of the piece. The sides and bottom show the characteristic ocher colored banding typical of this material. There are a couple of minor dings, chiefly on the backside; otherwise it is in fine condition. On the bottom is an accession # 257-86 but we have no further data on the source of that number.
    Overall measurements: 6 x 5.5 x 4.75 inches (15.2 x 14 x 12.1 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: North Star Minerals [Hoppel Catalog # D1529]
