DescriptionGARNET var. SPESSARTINE on SMOKY QUARTZ
Wushan Spessartine Mine, Tongbei, Yunxiao Co., Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China
Until this locality started to produce large coverage plates completely encrusted with orange Spessartine, virtually all decent specimens consisted of single, often loose, specimens in situ or from alluvial deposits, after they had weathered out. With the discovery of the Wushan locality, large plates profusely covered with orange encrustations became a must-have among Garnet aficionados, as well as collectors of Chinese minerals. It didn't hurt that the specimens often feature Smoky Quartz prisms rising up from the sea of garnets like skyscrapers in the fog. This fine example includes an irregular matrix almost completely covered in sparkling, equant crystals of a warm golden orange hue with well-formed and terminated Smoky Quartz crystals up to 1.75 inches (4.6 cm) in height, sticking up from the matrix and partially covered on the lower portions by small Spessartines creeping up the sides of the Quartz prisms.
Overall Measurements: 6.69 x 5.51 x 3.14 inches (17.0 x 14.0 x 8.0 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
