Cerro de La Concordia, Piedra Parada, Veracruz, Mexico

You have to give Mother Nature credit, every so often she throws you a curveball that has the collectors scratching their collective heads. We believe that what we have here - this is the garnet equivalent of what Michigan copper miners call a "skull", formed when minerals crystallize on the exterior of a rounded volcanic cobble. In this case the minerals are represented by two different depositional pulses as indicated by the two different colors of Garnet seen here: the brown one being the earlier phase and the green, the subsequent one. Later, when the cobble disintegrated due to corrosion and dissolution, the Garnet cast is all that remained. The process almost never leaves as perfect a cast as this. The green, transparent Garnet variety on the exterior of the piece is also referred to as "Demantoid" which is considered to be one of the most valuable of the gem varieties of Garnet. Overall condition of the piece is excellent and there is an accession number of "46AQ" on the bottom, which looks very much like an accession number from the Ed David Collection.
    Overall measurements: 8 x 4.5 x 3 inches (20.3 x 11.4 x 7.6 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Collector's Edge, ex. Ed David Collection (?) [Hoppel Catalog # D0813]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
