Galena has an isometric crystal structure, which can result in some fascinating shapes when modified. In some instances, Galena will form as a combination of cubic, octahedral, and dodecahedral faces comes together into an unusual habit dubbed the "Neudorf habit," named after this old, long-mined locality in Germany, in which the best of this formation is found. This specimen is a textbook representation of the Neudorf habit, with all three types of faces clearly defined and sharp. This single, rather large crystal has a deep gunmetal grey color and a highly reflective metallic luster, with few imperfections to disrupt. The crystal is nestled snugly in a cluster of surprisingly lustrous Siderite crystals, with a unique internal pearlescence/chatoyancy. The color is a nice olive brown. Sharp accents of Calcite are dotted between some Siderite. This is all crystallized over a matrix of shimmering Quartz. A fascinating combination specimen, with excellent crystallography!
