Description

    FRANKLINITE
Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

Franklinite is one of the few minerals named for an American from the political arena: Benjamin Franklin. A true renaissance man, Franklin was interested in the science and the arts, as well as being a very astute statesman. Many are the number of advances in these areas, initiated and pursued by this intellectual giant. Although it is known from a number of localities, for all practical purposes Franklinite is a one-locality mineral. It reaches the pinnacle of perfection in the Zinc Mines of ... Franklin (what else?), New Jersey where sharp crystals of mainly octahedral form were encountered in association with Calcite and reddish Zincite. This example sports a large (1 inch on edge), sharp octahedron partially embedded in coarsely crystalline white Calcite or marble. A couple of incomplete and large crystals are exposed as well along with a cloud of tiny Franklinites and a few reddish Zincites. The condition of the Franklinite is excellent and there is an accession number "37Y" on the back of the specimen, which correlates with a label from the Ed David Collection. In addition, it resided for a time with Dr. Gary Hansen.
    Overall measurements: 4 x 3 x 2.5 inches (10.2 x 7.6 x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Williams Minerals, Dr. Gary Hansen, Ed David [Hoppel # D0469]
