Middlehope Shield Mine, Westgate, Weardale, North Pennines, County Durham, England, UK

Limpid cubes of light emerald green run riot over the top of the porous, tan knob of this Middlehope Shield Mine wonder. The transparency of the Fluorite cubes seen here is on par with the best that Dal'negorsk has produced. In addition, the luster and growth figures are outstanding. The Middlehope Shield Mine had been a major Lead mine for England from at least 1809 to 1864. In 1818, there was a large discovery of crystallized green Fluorite at the mine. This very fine specimen most likely dates from that discovery. The mine has long since collapsed and was never opened in the 20th century. This stunning example bears cubic crystals up to .88 inch (2.2 cm) on edge. One crystal shows contact on a back/side face, otherwise condition is excellent. The specimen is freestanding and needs no base.
    Overall Measurements: 3.88 x 2.92 x 3.79 inches (9.88 x 7.43 x 9.64 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Western Minerals [Hoppel #D1135]

Although the accompanying catalog documentation had identified this Fluorite as coming from the Heights Mine, that is incorrect. The correct locality of this 19th century specimen is the Middlehope Shield Mine.
